How do I start out in astronomy?

Starting Out In Astronomy

If astronomy interests you there is a simple way to get the ball rolling. Get a telescope or even a pair of binoculars to start. Look up into the sky and see what is there. Learn to identify constellations, planets and the Milky Way.

The best way to start is simply by being curious; to look for more. Ask teachers questions about what you see. Start reading books that explain what it is you are looking at.

If you are still enamored by space and the stars and all that is out there, another great tool is a membership to an astronomy club or society. There are hundreds of these types of organizations where you can learn more about space. There are educational magazines you can subscribe to as well.

Look online for videos of outer space and observatories where you can see the stars through some of the most powerful telescopes in existence. This generation has the benefit of much more by way of technology than any before it.

Local libraries and research centers often have clubs where you can learn more and experience some cutting edge technologies related to astronomy. You just have to make the effort to seek these resources out.
